Spread the Word

Spreading the word is perhaps the easiest way to help slaves around the world. Without awareness, it will be hard to galvanize support for the modern abolitionist movement, and the secret, invisible world of modern slavery will continue to be just that: invisible. There are a million ways to create some noise, but here are a couple of ideas to help you get started:

  • Throw a party! Invite friends and family over for an awareness party. Screen a movie related to modern day slavery or share information about the issue.

  • Suggest an anti-slavery book for your book club. What better way to spread awareness than to have a group of people read about the issue and then discuss it in a group. If you aren't a part of a book club, consider starting one yourself or just getting a couple of friends to read the book with you.

  • Post flyers up on bulletin boards in your community or at local businesses. Flyers can be a great way to reach lots of people without breaking the bank. Flyers can be found on our resource page or you can create your own.

  • Connect with our Facebook group or Myspace page. These internet communities can be a great way of letting your friends and family know that you are interested in the plight of at least 27 million slaves.

  • Put our website at the end of your email messages. Many programs allow you to create a signature that automatically displays at the end of all of your emails. By adding our website and a short message about why you support the anti-slavery movement, you can share with hundreds of people your commitment to ending slavery.

  • Make a T-shirt or button that declares that slavery still exists. Not only will it help spread the word, it might be a good way to start up some conversations and make new friends.

  • Ask a local newspaper to run a story about modern slavery. Better yet, give them a story by organizing a community event that they can write about.

  • Ask your local library if you can hold a seminar about modern day slavery. Create a short PowerPoint presentation or pick out a short ten minute video to show.

  • Lead a Bible study focused on the plight of modern slavery. Not For Sale has a study available at http://www.keifercorp.com/ca/NFSChurchHandbook5-1.pdf
