Political Activity

Becoming politically active is a great way to help slaves around the world. Governments have a lot of influence through their political policies, and utilizing this influence is a crucial part of the end of modern slavery. Learn more about how to exert influence on both local and national governments.

National and State Level

On the national and state level, it is unlikely that you will be able to participate directly in the political process, but that does not mean you do not have a voice. You still have many opportunities to influence the actions of our governments, and perhaps the easiest way is to write your congressional representative. A short letter will do, explaining that you are concerned about human trafficking and slavery around the world and would encourage him or her to do whatever they can to stop this tragedy. For more information on how to write a letter to an elected official, see http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa020199.htm. For mailing addresses for national and state officials, see http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml. Most elected officials have moved to webmailing to prevent spam, which means that you fill out an email on a webpage.

Fortunately, the process of writing your elected official has been streamlined by recent websites that organize and send petitions on your behalf. One of the more popular websites, change.org, has a section specifically targeting issues related to human trafficking and slavery. Sending a petition on this website is painlessly easy and quick. Just go to http://humantrafficking.change.org/, find a petition that you support, and fill in the blanks. Your petition will be sent to the appropriate representatives and your voice will be heard!

Local Level

On the local level, you will probably have more opportunities for influence and direct involvement in the political process. Consider making a presentation to your city council about modern slavery. Challenge them to make strides to slave-proof your city. Futhermore, ask your local police force if they are aware that slavery could exist in their city. Encourage them to receive training to help them identify the signs of slavery and know how to respond. It may even be possible for you to lead an educational campaign in your city. The more awareness, especially in the political arena, the more likely slavery will be discovered and abolished.
