With all of the problems in our world, it is easy to become pessimistic and think that your actions as a single person are meaningless, but this couldn't be farther from the truth. The opportunities to change the world are perhaps more plentiful and obtainable than at any other time in this world. Due to globalization, the technology age, and the influential position in which we find ourselves, we can literally change lives without making huge sacrifices. Saving lives across the world no longer requires leaving your life behind and sacrificing everything. Now, through every day choices, you can make a difference. Here are some practical ways that you can do just that:
- Spread the Word: One of the biggest challenges for the modern abolition movement is that very few people know about the problem. Many people think that slavery is a thing of the past, something that was ended over a century ago. Unless the issue is brought to the forefront of our social concern, we will never make headway against this devastating problem.
- Giving Opportunities: There are many organizations and movements that are on the frontlines in the battle against modern slavery, but they need your help. Often, they are helpless not because they don't have the ability, but because they don't have the financial resources. As little as $30 a month, which is just a dollar a day, can free slaves, help them start a new life, and work towards prevention of future abuses. Your dollar can change a life, and together we can revolutionize the world.
- Consumer Opportunities: When it comes to social responsibility, all companies are not equal. By using social criteria as a factor in our consumer choices, we can put pressure on companies that are not being socially responsible and reward those that are. In addition, many online stores now sell products produced by ex-slaves, and buying these products supports the economic freedom of these newly freed people.
- Political Activity: Becoming politically active is a great way to help slaves around the world. Governments have a lot of influence through their political policies, and utilizing this influence is a crucial part of the fight to end modern slavery. - Involve your Church: Faith based initiatives are often more powerful and more effective than government programs. Many abolitionist movements, modern and historical, have started because religious people believed that they were called to stop the enslavement of humans. If you are a member of a faith community, whether it be Judaism, Islam, Christianity, or any other institution, consider involving your community in the fight against modern slavery.
- Involve your Campus: University and High School campuses can be a great way to spread the word about modern day slavery and encourage people to take action. Students seem to be more receptive and interested in social issues, and many movements throughout history have been started because of the dreams and ideas of young men and women.
